I had a wonderful birthday this past weekend with my friends in New York City and it feels like it just keeps giving – after a day of shopping and lunch at our favorite restaurant, we had a little adventure at South St. Seaport, and then returning to Connecticut got attention from my family and boyfriend, then spent Tuesday at my favorite beachside village! It’s been a week already of go-go-go and doesn’t seem like it’s ever ending, but I’m loving every bit of it.
My dear Dalin (make sure you check out her new website, Magic a La Mode!) and I went into New York City Friday night to make sure we’d have no morning-of-stress like traffic or catching trains, and it really was the best plan. Instead we had plenty of time to enjoy breakfast at our favorite spot, a Belgian restaurant that prides itself on fresh, crisp waffles and huge bowl-like mugs of hot chocolate.
Even in the morning, though, the streets and subway quickly became sweat-dripping-sticky hot! I’m glad I got a few shots in before my makeup melted off…! I’m so glad Dalin took this one of me, it’s my new favorite since I’m in my rose-lavender Purple Plum wig. Here’s the rest of my outfit!
The salopette doesn’t require a petticoat so it was pretty comfortable, and I’m really happy with how the DIY parts of my outfit came out – I made the violet glitter lolita shoes and dyed an old favorite Angelic Pretty blouse lavender. I also stole a print shot next to this awesome pink Vespa – which I would definitely want if I ever moved to New York City! It weaves in and out of traffic, easy to park… And of course it’s just the right shade of pink to match all my outfits!
We got up to my usual favorite hijinks – drooling over Korean and Japanese makeup products in Chinatown. I got my hands on some Liole on-the-go blush (it works like a little stamp – no more blush mess on your clothes!) and some Japanese face cleanser I’ve been after for a while. I also spotted this face mask… Earl Grey tea and macaron? In a face mask?
Here Dalin shows off the favor bags I made for the girls! I bought the present bags at Daiso in San Francisco – tiny carousels with unicorns on them!) and everyone got fairy wands, candy, dessert erasers, Japanese lip balm, and cupcake shaped bath fizzers. I figured since my guests came from all around and wore lolita on a 96 degree day, it was the least I could do!
After lunch, we headed back to our apartment and changed into more casual style to catch a movie in Times Square – instead of my blouse, I popped on a Jem t-shirt and simplified my hairstyle. I also got some really sweet presents from my friends – I’m wearing my new KumaKrafts Sailor Moon necklace with this casual pop-lolita coordinate. (Thank you Crystal!) Appropriate since Sailor Moon and I do share a birthday! I’m also clumsy, always late, lazy… uh-oh, creepily alike!
I finally saw Moonrise Kingdom and it was perfect. I loved every moment of it and would gladly see it again, and you can bet I want a copy. If you haven’t seen it yet, do! I think it just nudged Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette out of its spot in my heart, it’s so sincere, kitschy and sweet. We even got to see at my favorite theatre, not only because I prefer AMC but because it’s also got a great view! You can go out onto the balcony and look down on all of Times Square. I love all the screens and lights – it’s as bright as day even in the middle of the night.
Thanks so much for everyone who wished me a happy birthday this year! I got messages from friends and readers from all over the globe, and I feel truly happy that everyone wanted to wish me well as I turn 23. I already feel like 2012 is a very different year for me than 2011… I can’t wait to see what will happen in my 23rd year!
